Can You Get Dental Implants With Bone Loss?

Yes, many people with bone loss can still get dental implants. A dentist first checks how much jawbone you have with an exam and X-rays. If there is not enough bone, a bone graft can often rebuild the spot before the implant goes in. People who wear dentures can often switch to implants, too, though some need extra steps first.

Bone loss is one of the most common reasons people think they cannot get a tooth implant. At Sahara Dental Center in Las Vegas, Dr. Shiva Keshmiri, DDS (our patients call her Dr. K) looks at each case on its own. Here is what bone loss means for dental implants in Las Vegas, what a bone graft does, and what to expect if you wear dentures now.

The Quick Answer

  • Bone loss does not always rule out implants. Many people still qualify.
  • A bone graft can add bone where your jaw is thin. It may add a few months to treatment.
  • Denture wearers can often move to implants or to implant-supported dentures.
  • Only an exam and X-rays can tell you if you are a good fit.

Can you get dental implants if you have bone loss?

Often, yes. It depends on how much bone is left and where it is.

A dental implant is a small titanium post that sits in your jawbone, like a tooth root. A custom crown goes on top. Some people call it an implant tooth or a permanent tooth. The post needs enough bone around it to hold it firm.

Mild bone loss may need nothing extra. More bone loss may need a graft first. In some cases, a different plan works better, such as a few implants that hold a full set of teeth.

Why does the jawbone shrink after a tooth is lost?

Your jawbone needs work to stay strong, and tooth roots give it that work. When you chew, the roots press on the bone. When a tooth is gone, that spot gets no pressure, and the bone can shrink over time.

Other things are linked to bone loss, too:

  • Gaps left open for a long time. The longer a space stays empty, the more bone can shrink.
  • Gum disease. It can wear away the bone that holds your teeth.
  • Years of denture wear. Dentures sit on the gums. They do not press on the bone the way roots do.
  • Infection or injury. A badly infected or broken tooth can damage the bone around it.

This is one reason it helps not to wait too long to replace a lost tooth.

What is a bone graft for dental implants?

A bone graft adds bone where your jaw is too thin to hold an implant. Over time, your body grows its own new bone into the graft.

How long does a bone graft take to heal?

It depends on the size of the graft. A small graft may be placed the same day as the implant. A bigger graft often needs a few months to heal before the implant goes in. You get a timeline after your exam.

What is a sinus lift?

Your upper back teeth sit close to your sinuses. If the bone there is thin, a sinus lift adds bone under the sinus so an implant has room. It is a common type of bone graft for the upper jaw.

When should I get help after a graft?

Call us if pain gets worse instead of better. Go to the ER or call 911 if you have bleeding that will not stop, swelling that spreads, fever with swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Can you switch from dentures to dental implants?

Many people do. Long-time denture wearers may have some bone loss, so an exam comes first. Here are the common choices, side by side:

  • Single implants: Each missing tooth gets its own implant and crown. This needs enough bone at each spot.
  • Implant-supported dentures: A full denture snaps or locks onto a few implants. It often takes fewer implants than replacing each tooth. It holds steady when you eat and talk.
  • A regular denture: No surgery. It may need to be refit over time as your gums and bone change.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

A good candidate has healthy gums, enough bone or the option of a graft, and good health for healing. Your dentist will look at a few things:

  • Your gums. Gum disease needs to be treated first.
  • Your bone. How much there is and where it is.
  • Your health. Some health problems, like diabetes that is not under control, can slow healing. Tell your dentist about your health and your medicines.
  • Smoking. Smoking is linked to slower healing and more implant problems.
  • Daily care. Implants need brushing, flossing, and checkups, just like natural teeth.

What happens at a dental implant consultation?

At Sahara Dental, the first step is a free implant consultation. Here is what happens:

  • We look at your teeth, gums, and bite.
  • We take X-rays to see your bone.
  • We talk through your options, including whether you need a graft.
  • You leave with a clear plan and the cost before any work begins.

Bring a list of your medicines and any questions you have.

Does a bone graft change the cost of dental implants?

It can. A graft is an extra step, so it adds to the total. The number of implants, the type of tooth or denture on top, and any extractions also change the price.

Sahara Dental is in-network with most PPO plans, and our team verifies benefits for every new patient before treatment. Some PPO plans cover parts of implant care, like the exam, X-rays, extraction, or crown. Many plans reset each January, and unused benefits may not carry over. We also offer financing through Cherry, so you can split the cost into payments. Read more in our post on dental implant cost in Las Vegas, or see our insurance and financing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get dental implants with no bone?

If there is very little bone, an implant cannot go in right away. A bone graft can often rebuild the area first. In some cases, your dentist may suggest a different plan, such as implant-supported dentures or a bridge.

Does a bone graft hurt?

The area is numbed before the graft, so you stay comfortable during the procedure. Soreness and some swelling for a few days after are common. Your dentist will tell you how to care for the area and what to watch for.

How long after a bone graft can I get an implant?

It depends on the size of the graft. A small graft may be placed the same day as the implant. A larger graft often needs a few months to heal before the implant goes in.

Am I too old for dental implants?

Age alone does not usually rule you out. What matters more is your bone, your gums, and your overall health. Many older adults get implants after an exam shows they are a good fit.

Can I get implants if I have worn dentures for years?

Often, yes. Years of denture wear can lead to bone loss, so your dentist will check your bone first. You may need a graft, or implant-supported dentures may be a better fit.

Will my PPO plan help pay for a bone graft?

Some PPO plans cover part of a bone graft or other steps of implant care. Every plan is different. Sahara Dental is in-network with most PPO plans, and our team verifies your benefits before treatment.
