Do Dental Benefits Expire? How to Use Them in Time
Yes, many PPO dental benefits expire at the end of the plan year, often on December 31. Your yearly maximum resets in January, and the unused part usually does not roll over. To get the most from your plan, book your checkup and cleaning now and finish any treatment your dentist already recommended before the year ends.
At Sahara Dental Center in Las Vegas, we see this every fall. People pay for dental insurance all year, then lose what they did not use. Dr. Shiva Keshmiri, DDS (our patients call her Dr. K) put together this guide to help you use your benefits in time. If you are due for a visit, start with our general dentistry in Las Vegas page.
The Quick Answer
- Many PPO plans reset on January 1. Unused benefits usually do not carry over.
- Your deductible often resets, too. If you already met it, care this year may cost you less.
- Many FSA plans have a year-end deadline. Check your plan for the exact date.
- Book soon. The last weeks of the year get busy.
Do dental benefits really expire at the end of the year?
For many plans, yes. Most PPO dental plans give you a yearly maximum. That is the most your plan will pay toward your care in one plan year.
When the plan year ends, that maximum resets. Whatever you did not use is gone. It does not add to next year. A few plans have a rollover feature, but many do not.
Many plans follow the calendar year, so the reset happens on January 1. Some plans run on a different schedule set by your employer. Your plan papers will list your dates. You can also call your insurance company or ask us.
What dental benefits should I use before December 31?
Start with the care your plan covers best. Then look at any work your dentist already said you need.
- Checkups and cleanings. Many PPO plans cover these preventive visits at little or no cost to you. Many cover two a year. If you missed one, now is the time.
- X-rays. These are often part of a checkup and help catch problems early.
- Fillings. A small cavity is easier to fix now than after it grows.
- Crowns. If you were told you need a dental crown, your plan may help pay for part of it this year.
- Gum care. Deep cleanings and gum treatment may be partly covered, depending on your plan.
- Treatment you put off. Look back at your last visit. Was there work you planned to do later? Later may be now.
Why does your deductible matter right now?
Your deductible is the amount you pay before your plan starts to pay. It often resets with your plan year.
If you already met your deductible this year, more care before the reset may cost you less out of pocket. Wait until January, and you may have to meet it again. This is one more reason not to put off care you already need.
Do FSA and HSA dollars expire, too?
FSA dollars often do. HSA dollars do not.
A flexible spending account (FSA) is a pre-tax account you set up through work. Many FSAs have a use-it-or-lose-it rule. Some plans give a grace period or let a small amount carry over. Others do not. Check with your employer so you know your deadline.
A health savings account (HSA) works differently. The money stays in your account from year to year. Both can usually pay for dental care, such as copays, fillings, crowns, and other treatment.
Can I use my benefits for Invisalign or cosmetic work?
Sometimes. It depends on your plan.
- Invisalign and braces: Some PPO plans include orthodontic coverage. Some cover adults, and some cover only kids. Orthodontic benefits often have their own lifetime limit. Learn more about Invisalign clear aligners in Las Vegas.
- Crowns that fix a damaged tooth: These are often covered in part, because they restore the tooth.
- Cosmetic care like whitening or veneers: Most plans do not cover care that is only cosmetic. An FSA or HSA may still help in some cases.
The best way to know is to have us check your plan before you start.
How do I check what is left on my dental plan?
You can find out in a few minutes. Here are three easy ways:
- Log in to your insurance company's website or app.
- Call the member number on the back of your insurance card.
- Call our office. Sahara Dental is in-network with most PPO plans, and our team verifies benefits for every new patient before treatment.
Ask how much of your yearly maximum is left, whether you met your deductible, and when your plan year ends. See our insurance and financing page for more.
What if I have a toothache right now?
Do not wait for January. Pain is a sign that something needs care. Waiting can turn a small problem into a bigger one. Call us, and visit our emergency dentistry page for what to do next.
Go to the ER or call 911 if you have swelling in your face that spreads, fever with swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do unused dental benefits roll over to next year?
Most of the time, no. Many PPO plans reset your yearly maximum when the plan year ends, and unused benefits do not carry over. Some plans have a rollover feature, so check your plan or ask our team.
When does my dental plan year end?
Many plans follow the calendar year and reset on January 1. Some follow a different plan year set by your employer. Your plan papers or your insurance company can tell you your exact date.
Can I use my FSA for dental work?
Yes. FSA funds can usually pay for dental care like fillings, crowns, and copays. Many FSAs have a use-it-or-lose-it deadline, so check with your employer for your plan's rules.
Does dental insurance cover Invisalign?
Some PPO plans include orthodontic coverage, and some of those cover adults. Others cover only children or no orthodontics at all. Our team can check your plan before you start.
Is it too late to book a visit before the end of the year?
Not yet. The last weeks of the year get busy, so it helps to call soon. We will check your benefits and help you plan the visits that matter most.
What if I need more work than my benefits cover this year?
Ask about splitting your care across two plan years. Some treatment can start this year and finish after your benefits reset. We also offer financing through Cherry for the cost your plan does not cover.
